Good keyboard, slightly misleading

Corsair Gaming K70 RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Cherry MX Red Switches
Corsair Gaming K70 RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Cherry MX Red Switches

Pros: Overall it's exactly what I wanted in a keyboard. Typing feels good, media keys don't take take up half the space and it looks great. Even without the lighting it's a nice, black metal keyboard. It also has a few nice touches, like an included, optional wrist rest and small feet that flip open or closed on both the front AND the back, meaning you can raise the keyboard but also keep it flat.

Cons: My biggest gripe is that it does NOT have a 16.8 million colour range. There are only 8 levels of brightness per colour, giving you a grand total of 512 colours. It's simple enough to set up your own test to fade from one colour all the way to black and the jumps between brightness are easily apparent and consistent. Beyond that, if you check Reddit and the Corsair forums, you'll find people have reverse-engineered how the lighting works. It turns out there are only 3 bits assigned to lighting in the USB protocol, which you would think would be easily fixable through firmware updates, but it turns out this might be a limitation of the controller running the LEDs. The forums are still waiting for an official response, but I don't foresee this being fixed soon, if ever. 512 colours are certainly enough to get most effects to look decent, but it's a far cry from the advertized range. Also there is currently no support for scripting lighting effects with Lua, which was originally a selling point for the keyboard. They claim it's coming and there's no reason not to believe them.

Overall Review: People are complaining about the software being difficult to use. I agree it's a bit overwhelming at first, b ut y ou get the hang of it pretty quickly. I believe that if you give it a day, anyone can make a simple effect and more people are posting their profiles online everyday if you want to grab a premade one. The software's not perfect, but it's not really an issue.

Needs more PCIe

MSI MPG A1000GS PCIE5, Fully Modular Gaming 1000W Power Supply, 80+ Gold, Dual 12V-2x6 Cables, Server-grade Capacitor, ATX 3.1 & PCIe 5.1 Ready, Low-Noise, Semi Digital, 10 Year Warranty

Pros: - Nice, all black look - Easy enough to plug in

Cons: - Would be nice if it had one more PCIe cable for GPUs that don't use 12VHPWR (eg: RTX 2080 Ti) - The end of the SATA cable just so happens to bend the wrong way for my layout, but it bent enough to work

Overall Review: Can't speak to longevity yet, but it wasn't DOA. It's doing what I need, just wish it had one more PCIe cable to avoid adapters
